PSSI Accused of Hiring Workers with Stolen Identities!
In a shocking turn of events, Packers Sanitation Services Inc. (PSSI) is under scrutiny once again, this time for allegedly hiring workers who have used stolen identities to get jobs with the company. Former managers, local police officials, and victims of identity theft have all come forward with alarming reports about PSSI’s workers repeatedly using fake or stolen IDs.
Fake IDs and Young Workers
PSSI, which has been fined $1.5 million by the Labor Department for employing children as young as 13, is no stranger to controversy. However, the latest accusations of stolen identities have sent shockwaves through the industry. Reports suggest that PSSI employees with obviously fake IDs were repeatedly hired because there was nobody else to do the work.
Impact on Identity Theft Victims
The victims of identity theft have been left to deal with the fallout from PSSI’s hiring practices. They have to deal with the aftermath of the crime, including hours of personal detective work, contacting company employees and law enforcement officials, and handling the resulting headache. Tax season is particularly challenging for them, with the IRS calling to ask questions about how they were able to hold down multiple jobs in multiple states.
Investigations Underway
The Department of Homeland Security is currently investigating the hiring of migrant children to work in slaughterhouses, and it’s working with the Justice Department to investigate whether human smuggling schemes brought these minors to work in multiple slaughterhouses for multiple companies across multiple states. While there is no indication yet that DHS is investigating PSSI or other slaughterhouse companies for trafficking, the investigation aims to determine how minors from Central America ended up working in jobs that are legal only for American adults by using IDs stolen from US citizens.
